FAQs

How do you find music?

I hear pieces I want to play on recordings I own, or on the radio, or in concerts I've gone to.  I have a huge collection of CDs of all kinds of music (rock, jazz, classical, folk & country, & world music);

and a particularly large collection of classical guitar recordings (CDs & LPs).  And then I hunt the

piece or song down - either buying a published work or finding the original and transcribing it

myself (skip the "middleman" and end up with a better version anyway).

How do you know which ensemble to arrange a piece for?

It depends on the complexity of the music, and the range.  Also sometimes the character of a piece:

does the melody call for a cello or a flute?  And often the nature of a program for one ensemble suggests a new arrangement for that group.  And I respond to requests!

Do you ever find that one piece works for several ensembles?

Yes - in fact I like getting lots of "mileage" out of my arranging efforts.  For example, I've re-worked

my version of "Shenandoah"  several times:  originally for flute & guitar (to replace a less interesting published version), then recorder, viola da gamba & guitar, then flute, bassoon & guitar, then viola, cello & guitar, then solo guitar.  Bach's Arioso (from the Concerto BWV 1056), a perfect "processional" for weddings, also works well in several formats.  And for a recent concert I adapted my Renaissance ensemble arrangement of "Here Comes The Sun" (already revised for 2 other groups) to work for

flute, viola & guitar.  Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You"  was an item for a Christmas gig for Fishbowl and I became so enamored of it that I arranged it for 7-piece brass ensemble for the Music on the Village Green event on Christmas Eve in Woodstock in 2019.

    Programs: solo & ensembles

    solo guitar

    Guitar programs are usually organized

    historical . . . older ("early") to more recent ("modern") music
    or
    thematic . . .  focused on period(s), style(s) or composer(s)
